Autumn Term: Celebrations!

Our first topic, as Year 3 children start their journey into KS2, will be Celebrations! Starting with kite festivals, and finishing with Diwali and Christmas celebrations, we will go on a journey of festivals at this time of year. In Geography we will be travelling around the continent of Europe in the first half term and then - linked to a history unit on the Indus Valley - we will find out what people in the village of Chembakkoli in the south of India celebrate too. In DT we will be designing and making kites in the first half term and creating and decorating diva lamps from clay in the second half term. In art we are learning the skill of colour mixing, focussing on the work of Mondran and Kandinsky. We will use these skills when we design and make rangoli patterns later in the term.

In maths, we will be furthering knowledge of place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In English we will be writing poetry and adventure stories in the first half term and instructions, plays and non-chronological reports in the second half term. All of this writing will be linked to work in our topic.

We will have group guided reading sessions at first, but when the children are ready we will start our first whole class novel study of Bamba Beach by Pratima Mitchell.
